As
show breeders of course our number one priority is confirmation, but not every
litter is going to produce that incredible show puppy. So we produce pets.
These pets need to be healthy, sound, have excellent temperaments, so they can
make a good companion for their potential new owners.
Even when we do get that show prospect puppy and grow it up,
sweat out the bites that slide from one end to the next. Train the little
dear to charge out in the ring like they own the place, and pray to god they
don't, oh I don't know, bite the judge, growl at everything black and pee down
your shoe when your backs turned. We work these things out and chase last
single points, or that one last major that breaks time after time.
WOW we finished our CHAMPION!! Now what?? Well
the reason we show confirmation is to be judged to a set standard. A
championship means that this animal meets if not exceeds this standard.
When judged against other dogs. To the purpose of what we ask? Is it
to prove that we know best, that our picture of the perfect Pomeranian is right?
Is it to go compete and win, because we enjoy the challenge? For some
maybe, to me it is to improve upon the breed and here is the key word BREED.
This leads to the next thing we need our animals to be able
to do reproduce. They need to be able copulate, impregnate or get
pregnant, carry puppies to term, and then deliver and care for those puppies.
With out this what is the point? In many breeds some of these key factors have
been given up for confirmation. Smaller dogs produce smaller litters.
Big heads lead to more c-sections and believe it or not mismatched size of
genitalia to a need for artificial insemination.
Here at Redhots Pomeranians I try to keep this in mind when I
pick who gets bred to who. I also try to look at my kennels over all needs for
example, I feel my dogs overall need better head coat. So now I am
breeding for that quality trying not to lose the good qualities I have already.
The sport of Dogs is very arbitrary, we as the breeder have to focus on our own
objectives for our kennels. The goal to produce our own vision of the
perfect Pomeranian. My dogs are all perfect to me they each have
their good qualities and bad qualities but as personalities go they are dear to
me.
