Ok, How do   you groom a Pom?  I guess I will start at the beginning.

Wild and Wooley, before grooming

FIRST THE BRUSHING

Brush the dog out you don't want to get any knots wet they will tangle worse so star with Brushing.

First lay the dog in your lap between your legs head facing out.   Pet the dog down its throat laying the hair down you then leave your hand at the throat holding down the hair and take a small portion or line of hair out from under your hand.  Brush this up toward the dogs face.  Continue in lines brushing the dog from throat to legs holding the mass of hair down pulling a small portion out with your brush and brushing it towards the head.

You then turn the dog over and do the same from head to tail.  Lay the dog perpendicular to you and brush lines from the spine down to the stomach once again holding the hair down with your left hand and pull a line of hair out from the head to the tail, brushing toward the  spine

When you come upon a knot a change from your brush to a metal tooth comb.  This is the best to remove the knot with.  Pick at it till it pulls apart and can be combed out.  If needed a little baby powder can help loosen up the knot but I prefer a horse product called Cowboy Magic Detangler.  It really does the job and a little goes a long way with out spreading powder all over me :)

 OK, NOW THE BATH!!!

I use a little dish detergent to cut the grease behind the ears.  Really get it rubbed in let it soak in while you lather the rest of the dog.  Now with my gentle dog shampoo I usually head for the Butt next it needs a good soak too!!  and don't forget to express those anal glands.  Once he is all soaped up and scrubbed real good it is time to rinse.  I can’t over state this RINSE RINSE RINSE.  When you think you’ve got it all Rinse again!!!  Left over soap0 will cause itching and dandruff.

Now it is time to ring out the dog a bit.  I squeeze with my hand, starting at the nose going  down each leg and don't forget the tail.  Next pat them down with a towel.  Next I put in any leave in conditioners I use.

Blow dry on low repeating the line brushing that you did earlier as you go.  You now have a clean, brushed dog who is ready for a trim !

 NOW FOR THE TRIMMING

To achieve a cat foot on a Pom you must keep the nails tight and I mean tight.  Cutting them hard and short once as puppies rather than quicking them over and over it is more humane in my opinion.

After trimming the nails trim the coat on the feet.  While the dog is laying belly up cut the hair between the toes and trim around the paw to be level with the nails.

To trim the ears take the ear leather between your thumb and forefinger.  Pinch and run your fingers up the ear until your nails feel the edge of the tip.  Trim the tip of the ear and round to blend into the sides.  By having your  nail at the edge of the ear will ensure that you will not cut the ear.  The shape of the ear matter of discretion some like a pointed ear some like them slightly rounded but remember this is a good opportunity to slightly redefine your ear-set.  By moving your thumb over and you can make the ears move in appearance.   You might prefer the trim with your nails on inside a bit or on the outside of the ear.  It also makes a difference if you leave them trimmed flatter toward the inside you will pull them in tighter even more.

The Finished Product after grooming... What a difference.

Trimmed nice and tight !
